¡Adelante!

A DfE-funded school-based pilot model of subject knowledge enhancement in Spanish for KS2 and KS3 teachers.

Rationale
Cambridgeshire schools have traditionally taught mainly French and German.  In the last 5-10 years there has been a transition towards Spanish, mostly as 2nd foreign language but in some cases as 1st foreign language in secondary schools, leading to a sharp increase locally in the demand for teachers who can teach Spanish in addition to French and/or German.

In addition, with the introduction of statutory languages at KS2, primary schools that feed into secondary schools with Spanish as the first foreign language require either urgent up-skilling of their existing staff who have some Spanish already but need to be more confident in the delivery of a progressive 4-year curriculum, or they need to source some additional Spanish teaching, for upper KS2 for example.  This has compounded the demand for Spanish teaching in the area.

Course structure
The Spanish subject knowledge enhancement course is completely FREE to teachers and includes:

1) Weekly taught sessions of 1 ½ hours in one of two venues:
2) Follow up tasks online to consolidate and develop Spanish knowledge
3) Additional modules on languages teaching methodology, which will include:

1) Use of target language in the classroom
2) Planning and preparing high-quality Spanish lessons
3) Teaching Spanish grammar
4) Differentiation
5) Using ICT to teach Spanish
6) Using authentic and literary resources in the Spanish classroom
7) Effective assessment in Spanish at KS2 and KS3

These modules will be accessed online and will involve some reading followed by tasks to complete, in the classroom where appropriate.  The modules can be completed in any order.

The Spanish classroom resources were prepared by María Collado-Canas, a colleague in our department. I provide the online follow up material and the additional modules on methodology.
